The Rant for 7/4 (Final Edition)

All That You Take With You Is What You Leave Behind

"Start a new chapter, I find what I'm after is changing every day. Change in the season's enough of a reason to want to get away. Quiet and pensive, my thoughts apphrehensive, the hours drift away . . .leaving my homeland, playing a lone hand--my life begins today."
-Rush "Fly By Night"

I'm Lewis Smith, and one last time, this is the Rant.
Well, guys and gals, it's been a long and winding road. Through peaks and valleys, moments of triumph, defeat, and utter tragedy, we've all been along for a very weird ride. Some of us stayed the whole trip, some of us got off at a rest stop or a Stuckey's along the way.
But like the man said--no road runs forever, and ours is at the end. Whether we've reached our destination or are just turning a corner, who knows?
This is gonna be short and sweet--you guys already know about the move to ESB, and if you didn't, you picked a rather . . .*odd* . . .time to start reading my stuff. But no. No ranting. No recriminations. Just one last chance to say thanks to everyone who came along for the ride.
We begin where I began--Chris Elam, who *finally* strode into the 20th century and bought hisself a comp, so he could read my stuff. But he gets first billing, because without him and the seminal work he wrung outta my lazy ass, I wouldn’t have even *considered* writing as a way of life. As it turns out, that was one of the kindest things he could have done, because writing is all I have now. *L* Special thanks should also go to his sister Amy, whose smouldering lust for me is *always* a confidence booster (juuuuust kidding Amy. Put the knife down) Thanks, ya crazy kids you.
From about that same time, I'd like to thank my sister, who, after a little arm-twisting finally read the page and liked it. Thanks sis. . .and I'm sorry for trying to destroy your Survivor album when I was five.
Thanks also go to Steve Fincaham, who had to listen to my Rants live, then came back to the fold to see the ends result of that. And he's also another one of those guys who was there when it counted. One of those guys who really always comes through . . .one of the best friends I've ever had. Thanks man, everything you've done for the cause  means a lot to me.
Rob Strangman (who *totally* cribbed my style for Zero Signal, no matter *what* he tells you. Just kidding, Rob.) who gave me one of my first links, supported the HOH Forum even when he was the *only* person there, and has been my staunchest cheerleader. Thanks Rob . . .here's hoping you don’t desert when ESB kicks in and you have to explain all those drawings of partially nude women to whatever significant other he has this week. Thanks for the support, Rob-san.
To the mighty RZM, AKA ExMortis, AKA Robin-san ("Dr. Chaos's #1 Fan!"), or just plain Robin. The even tempered easy-humoured Yin to my Yang, who *also* gave me one of my earliest links (this isn’t a value judgement or anything--I'm trying as best I can to go chronologically, ya know) introduced me to sometime friend, sometime nemesis DK, AKA Mikell Burr and generally tolerated my ass even when I was being an utter beastly prick (I sense him reading this and saying "as opposed to what else?") and hooking me up with more shit than my old ass ever merited. It was always valued and it's never been forgotten. You couldn't ask for a better pair of friends--yes, even when you’re a-feudin'--at any price, and I'm very lucky to count Mikell and Robin  among them. Thanks guys.
Speaking of people who hooked my shit up, special thanks go to Adorya-san, who drew more and better pics of my character than I did. Can;t wait to see how WoA shapes up. Thanks, mon ami.
To Scion, who not only discovered this little slice of web life but brought friends in Minxy and Kat (Or am I allowed to out them and call them Faith and Katie yet? Ah well, what are they gonna do? Fire me?) and introduced a whole hell of a lot of people to SSL. Scion, you've always been a good friend, even when we didn’t see eye to eye about things like DMB, it was nice to know we both wanted to smack Courtney Love in the pelvis with a croquet mallet. Thanks bro, but I get to hit her first.
Yes, thanks even go to Greg, even though he's not with us here anymore. Again--even when you don’t see eye to eye to people anymore (or don't see them *period*) you should never ever ignore the gratitude they showed you, no matter *what* caused the split. Thanks man.
And before the grand finale, a special thanks to the nameless, faceless readers who drifted in and out and never let me know they were reading expect by the slow motion of the counter going ever higher. A thank you to all of you and anyone else I've forgotten (c'mon, I'm an old man, for heaven's sake--I'm gonna forget someone)--but thank you, and don’t take your absence here as some sort of slight.
And finally, in the end as in the beginning, is greatest thank-you to the woman for whom I created this enterprise four years ago as I was recovering from a long day of bucking crates up in a 100 degree warehouse. Micaila, without the love and support you showed through those four years, I would have never made it this far, and I mean that about this webpage as much as I do my own life. My life's been enriched to have you in it, and the page will always have the memories of your four Rants. I miss you every day, and I love you very much. I'm moving on from this page, but my heart will forever be yours. I love you, always and forever. Ay ishite imasu itsu mo, shiroibara-chan! *PK*
So. . .Goodbye for now. ESB will be up soon. It'll be different, but I hope you'll give me a chance and not forget the fun time's we've had here.
I'll see you when the clouds come home.
